What You’re Actually Buying

Here’s the part the marketing copy glosses over: none of these three is really doing full on-site composting. Nature’s Head and Air Head are desiccating toilets. Solid waste dropped into a 5–5.5-gallon bin, dusted with peat moss or coco coir and stirred with a crank handle, doesn’t spend enough time in that small chamber — four to six weeks, typically — to fully compost into anything you’d spread near a vegetable bed. What actually happens is it dries out fast enough, and stays aerobic enough, to stop smelling and stop being a health hazard; real composting finishes later, in a second bin outside for another season. Separett’s Villa 9210 (the 9215 is the same toilet with an added AC/DC power option — the 9210 itself runs 12V DC only, not a rebadge of a different mechanism) does even less on-site processing: it’s a urine-diverting collection and drying toilet, not an in-unit composter. Solids drop into a bag-lined container and dry in place; actual composting, same as the other two, happens later in an outside bin. The jug is the chore people underestimate going in and stop noticing by month two — a five-minute walk to a tree line or a drain, not the ordeal the phrase “composting toilet” implies. Put those numbers next to something concrete: 60 watt-hours is what a phone charger pulls in under an hour. Against a modest 4–6 kWh/day off-grid cabin budget, even the Separett’s higher draw — its bigger chamber needs more airflow, hence the extra watt — is under 2% of the daily total. None of these three will ever be the line item that forces you to add a panel. Most owners run the fan off a small dedicated 12V source rather than folding it into the main system’s sizing math at all.

Bulking Media, and What a Year Actually Costs

A compressed brick of peat moss or coco coir runs low teens of dollars and, fluffed with water, fills several solids-bin cycles — call it roughly $40–80 a year for two people living aboard full-time, closer to $15–25 for weekend use. Coco coir costs about the same but comes from a renewable coconut byproduct rather than a harvested bog, why most manufacturers now recommend it as the default over peat. The Separett uses less media overall — a top-dressing after each use rather than a full pre-fill — so its per-year cost lands at the low end of that range despite the bigger chamber.

The number that surprises people more than media cost is the water saved. A standard flush toilet uses roughly 1.6 gallons a flush; two adults at five or six flushes a day each is 16–19 gallons a day removed from the household water budget — a meaningful line on any off-grid water system sized around rainwater catchment or a limited well.
