Home Backup Power in Texas: Costs, Outage Risk, Incentives & Vetted Installers

Texas has delivered two separate proofs, three years apart, that “the grid is fine” and “your house has power” are not the same sentence. In February 2021, Winter Storm Uri knocked out electricity to 4.5 million Texas homes and businesses for up to four days, in a statewide freeze that came — by ERCOT’s own account — minutes from a total, weeks-long grid collapse. In July 2024, Hurricane Beryl proved the opposite failure mode: ERCOT had plenty of electricity to sell that week, and more than 2.2 million CenterPoint customers around Houston sat in the dark anyway, some past a full week, deep into Gulf Coast summer heat, waiting on downed trees and broken poles rather than a shortage of megawatts.

Two different disasters, two different seasons, two different causes — and the same lesson underneath: “am I protected from the next Texas outage” is really two separate questions, and most homeowners size their backup power against only one of them.

Beryl’s numbers are worth sitting with, because they haven’t had their own headline the way Uri has. More than 2.2 million CenterPoint customers lost power within hours of landfall, peaking above 2.6 million across the state. A week later, close to 2 million had been restored — but eight days after landfall, more than 260,000 Houston-area customers were still sitting without electricity, in July heat, with no working refrigeration and no AC. At least 23 deaths were tied to the storm and the outage that followed it, several of them heat-related, in the days after the wind died down. CenterPoint brought in roughly 12,000 additional outside workers to speed restoration and was later criticized, including in a Public Utility Commission investigation, over vegetation management along its lines and being short-staffed for a storm of that size. Why ERCOT being “fine” doesn’t protect your street

Every summer, Texans watch the same ritual: a hot week arrives, ERCOT flags tight conditions or asks for conservation, and the news runs a reserve-margin graphic. It trains people to think the risk is “running out of electricity, statewide.” Heading into summer 2026, ERCOT’s own base-case outlook puts that reserve margin at roughly 18.3% at the peak-demand hour — comfortably above the industry’s own adequacy target — even as peak demand itself is forecast to set a fresh all-time record, somewhere around 90,500–98,000 MW, well past the prior record of 85,508 MW set in August 2023. A large share of that new demand isn’t homes running more air conditioning; Texas transmission providers now have interconnection requests on file for well over 200 gigawatts of new large-load data-center demand through the early 2030s. On paper, summer 2026 is one of the more comfortable years the state has had in a while.

Beryl is the reason that number can’t be the whole story. The storm hit in the middle of July; ERCOT never issued a conservation appeal; generation was never the constraint at any point that week — and more than 2.2 million Houston-area customers sat without power anyway, some for more than a week, because a tree limb and a utility pole don’t care what the statewide reserve margin says. Reserve margin measures whether Texas can generate enough electricity, in aggregate, on the worst afternoon of the year. It says nothing about whether the specific wire between your street’s transformer and your breaker panel survives the next storm. Those are two different systems run by two different operators — ERCOT manages generation and the transmission grid; your local utility, not ERCOT, owns the poles and lines your house actually plugs into — and Texas has now had a headline failure in each one within three years of the other.
